Plant of the Month – April. Exochorda

Our plant of the month for April is the Exochorda. This versatile shrub is easy to grow in a variety of positions within the garden. It is most happy in full sunlight but will do well in some shady spots.

Characteristics

The Exochorda is a deciduous shrub with small, oval-shaped leaves that are bright green in colour. Masses of pure white flowers bloom from late spring to early summer.

Care

This plant is very adaptable and can thrive in both full sun and partial shade and is happy in most soil types. It is also a low maintenance plant, only requiring damaged branches to be trimmed. A good prune straight after blooming will ensure an excellent show of flowers the following year. It prefers moist, well-draining soil that is rich in nutrients. Annual mulching is beneficial to encourage good growth the following year (see our tips on the benefits of mulching).

Conclusion

The Exochorda is a hardy shrub that does well in most areas of a West or South facing garden.
